This area was purchased by the Florida East Coast Railroad and used to quarry Key Largo limestone (fossilized coral), for the Flagler Overseas Railroad in the early 1900's.
After the railroads completion, limestone or "keystone" was still quarried here until the mid 1960's.
The Hurricane Monument at Mile Marker 82 in Islamorada is constructed from this keystone.
You will find beautiful and well maintained walking trails throughout the Park.
As you explore the key, you will find walls of fossilized limestone and old machinery that will give you a peek into the history of the area.
