Besides some basic travel clothes, you don't need a lot to get by in the "Keys". You could stuff an ultra-light backpack with personal belongings and move to the islands!
The few things that you "really" need are personal protection items to guard you from the sun!
Below you will find a list of things to bring on your trip to the "Keys".
Keep in mind that the islands are sub tropical and the climate is hot and humid.
Pack light and don't over pack. You could spend a couple of weeks in the "Keys" and never need anything but t-shirts, shorts, sandals, a hat and sunglasses!
"The use of traveling is to regulate imagination by reality, and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are." - Samuel Johnson
Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. Water and sweat will wash away sunscreen so be sure to apply liberally and often!
Find a hat that will shield your eyes, nose, ears and neck.
Wear sunglasses with UV protection of at least 90%. Polarized glasses are great to help reduce glare. If you will be spending time on the water, consider side shields. They help reduce the sun from cutting in the sides. Use a Croakie or retainer to help prevent loss of your sunglasses.
If you play it smart, you will spend the majority of your vacation very comfortably in shorts, and swimsuits. Avoid the early sunburn by using sunscreen and enjoy the rest of your vacation!
Light weight, light colored long sleeve shirts and long pants are recommended for full sun protection. Be sure to don these garments before the sunburn, not after!
Chances are you will be wearing your sandals most of the time (unless you sunburn your feet). Tennis shoes and socks come in handy to cover up and for walking and hiking the many trails in the "Keys"!
Whether you bring it or buy it here, make sure you have it!
