Walking the State Parks in Florida
and The Florida Keys

The "Keys" and Other State Parks in Florida Offer Many Hiking Options

"In the Keys, you may consider hiking a bit more like just walking in the wild for awhile!"

After all, there are no mountains to climb and no rivers to cross. The islands are flat and most of the trails are groomed. But for those of you that love "getting quiet" and enjoying the solitude of the outdoors, the "Keys" offer you some beautiful and interesting choices.

Starting with the Everglades National Park, which create the northern boundary of the Florida Bay, all the way to the Dry Tortugas National Park, you will find some excellent trails, beaches, and hammocks to explore.

Starting with the Everglades National Park, which create the northern boundary of the Florida Bay, all the way to the Dry Tortugas National Park, you will find some excellent trails, beaches, and hammocks to explore.

We have explored most of these areas and we look forward to exploring them again and again.

Most of the state parks in Florida and the "Keys" have hiking trails and many offer handicapped access with groomed sections and lookout areas. Finding and exploring these trails is a great way to get to know the "Keys" on a more personal level.

When exploring the back-country trails and hammocks, take your time. Read the signs, listen and learn the fauna and flora. Archive them with your camera. Find a nice shady spot and have lunch. Relax and enjoy these areas. Keep in mind that these places have dodged the development bullet! In my book, that makes them scarce and special indeed.

Many of the state parks in Florida have concessions but you won't find many in the "Keys" besides John Pennekamp and Bahia Honda state parks. Be sure to bring the items you will need with you. Check out our "Keys Kit" below. You don't need much, but what you need, you need! At the very least you will want to bring water, bug spray, and sunscreen. On top of that you should take a snack, hat, sunglasses, long sleeve shirt, long pants, and a camera!

When you are looking for something besides the main attractions, beaches and clubs, treat yourself to a nature walk. Clear your head, grab some solitude and leave the not so natural world behind!

Besides the regular travel guide type spots, we will be showing you some of our favorite hikes, walks, and hop-a-longs from the Everglades to the Dry Tortugas.

"The Keys Kit!"

There are somethings you should have with you whenever you are out enjoying the "Keys" wonderful climate. You should always carry sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat that will shade your nose and ears, bug spray and water. You also may want to carry some long pants and a long sleeved shirt for when you have had enough sun. Last but not least, bring your camera.
