Dagny Johnson is a beautiful tropical hardwood hammock that almost became another victim of condo development. Fortunately for everyone but the developers, it didn’t. It’s the home of 84 protected species of animals and plants including the American Crocodile, Mahogany Mistletoe, and Wild Cotton. Dagny Johnson offers over six miles of trails to explore. Easy access but no concessions. Come prepared.

John Pennekamp State Park is perfect for families, couples, or singles looking for relaxation. Tons of amenities include boat trips, snorkeling, two beach areas, guided tours, pavilions, marina, dive charters trips, walking trails, camping, nature center and a small store. JP is a natural preserve and an excellent place to learn about the local waters and reef systems. A definite stop for all! The African Queen

Check out the original “African Queen” used in the classic movie with Humprey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn. It’s another of the Key Largo attractions and it’s located at MM 100 Ocean Side. You can find the boat next to the Holiday Inn. The “African Queen” was used as a passenger shuttle from 1912 to 1968. She shuttled passengers across Lake Albert from the Congo to Uganda. On top of that, she’s been around the world two times!

Jacobs Aquatic Center

Jacobs Aquatic Center hosts 3 swimming pools. You’ll find a 25-meter 8-lane MYRTHA competition pool with a contiguous diving pool and 2 diving boards. The diving pool is 12′ deep so it’s also suitable for SCUBA certification. A ramp accessible multipurpose MYRTHA pool. For the young ones, an interactive play pool/water park (12-18 inches deep) featuring a Pirate Ship, “spray” gym, and “beachfront” entry.

The Florida Everglades

The Florida Everglades is unique. It’s the only wetland of it’s kind in the world. You’ll find a mixture of ecosystems including sawgrass marshes, hardwood hammocks, Cypress groves, pinelands, mangrove and coastal praries, and the Florida Bay. An excellent way to get your feet wet is to visit Everglades National Park.

Florida Keys Wild Bird Center

The Florida Keys Wild Bird Center offers injured birds a second chance. Their mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release native and migratory wild birds that have been harmed or displaced, to provide or locate a humane shelter for those birds that cannot be released, and to educate the public toward the importance of coexistence with all wild bird species.
