Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas National Park provides a wonderful camping experience!
The fortunate see it as a small and fragile ecosystem full of life, to be enjoyed quietly and carefully. The unfortunate view it as a barren rock, void of life. With no ATMs, cell phones, or Playstations. - Jim Champion
On top of the overall adventure, the "Tortugas" are packed with U.S. and Florida History.
The Dry Tortugas consist of seven islands located 70 miles west of Key West, Florida.
The water, the weather and the living coral reefs make the Tortugas a true tropical paradise!
On our camping trip to Ft. Jefferson, we loaded our gear right on the ferry and had an excellent ride over.
An excellent bonus on the ride over was a huge waterspout we witnessed just west the Marquesas.
Although we opted for the ferry, you can also take your own boat or the seaplane out of Key West.
If you plan a camping trip to the tortugas, go light. You'll be happy if you do. If anything, pack the extra weight in water. Take the necessities and leave the luxuries.
We did it all while we were there. Explored Ft. Jefferson, snorkeled, took photos, ate very well and had an outstanding experience!
