The Dagny Johnson State Park is a real Key Largo treasure.
Dagny came very close to falling victim to condo development. That just makes exploring DJ State Park today that much sweeter.
“I, who cannot stay in my chamber for a single day without acquiring some rust, and when sometimes I have stolen forth for a walk at the eleventh hour of four o'clock in the afternoon, too late to redeem the day, when the shades of night were already beginning to be mingled with the daylight, have felt as if I had committed some sin to be atoned for.” ~Henry David Thoreau

Located at MM 106 Oceanside, this park hosts the largest remaining stand of West Indian tropical hardwood in the United States.
The 2,400 acre park is home to 84 protected animal and plant species.
Among the animals you may see are Key Largo cotton mice, American Crocodiles, Key Largo Wood Rats and Schaus Swallowtail Butterflies.
Ranger guided tours are available. Check with the Park to find out dates and times.
This park will provide you with a peaceful and quiet nature walk. We have visited the park on many different occasions and only twice have we even seen other people.
The winter is a great time to visit the park because it isn't as hot and humid as the summer months, plus, most of the bugs are at bay.
There is a paved road you can walk or bike when visiting the park. It is a about one and a quarter miles long (two and a half round trip).
This is the main route in the park. Many signs along the route explain the flora you are seeing as you cruise the park.
There are benches along the way so you can sit and rest, sit and enjoy, or just sit and ponder the beauty of the area.
Make sure to come prepared when visiting. Bring bug spray, food, water, camera, sunscreen, and long sleeves and pants.
You can obtain backcountry permit for further exploring an additional six miles of trail in the Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park.
These permits can be applied for at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park Ranger Station.
There are no concessions in the park but you will find information kiosks, restrooms, and picnic tables.
Make your plans to visit soon!
