The Cuba Libre Recipe

Perfect by Design!

The Cuba Libre recipe is as simple as it is elegant!

Cuba Libre Recipe

In Spanish, Cuba Libre means "Free Cuba".

The true origin of the Cuba Libre is somewhat of a mystery, although it's believed by many that the drink was first poured in Cuba in the year 1900.

This Cuba Libre is commonly called a "Rum and Coke" in the United states, the UK, Ireland and Canada. The Rum and Coke is served with the lime juice being optional.

While the "Cuba Libre" calls for a white rum, the "Rum and Coke" is normally poured with a "requested" rum. Many enjoy the "Rum and Coke" with a dark or dirty rum.

Origin...

One account claims that the drink was invented in Havana, Cuba around 1901 by patriots aiding the country of Cuba during the Spanish American War. It was poured as a toast to this Caribbean island.

A similar account of the origin involves Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders. Supposedy Captain Russell ordered a Bicardi Gold with Coka Cola and a wedge of lime. He really enjoyed it, and the other soldiers ordered a round and toasted "Por Cuba Libre"!

This account might be flawed because the "Rough Riders" left Cuba in 1898, and Coca Cola didn't arrive in Cuba until 1900.

No matter the origin, it is a fine drink. A rum cocktail, simple and raw.
